I'm trying to connect a little better on bluesky now (too), and I like that my domain is my handle: bsky.app/profile/remysharp.com

Has anyone who follows me studied web development at university? Ideally interested in UK, but mostly curious what the courses offer, what kind of thing you learn and how (placement, projects, etc). Looked for web dev at Brighton Uni, but couldn't find it (maybe it's a unit?)

In 2017 notwaldorf spoke at #FFConf on standards, the process & web components (not too disimilar to components today) youtube.com/watch?v=326SIMmRjc8&list=PLXmT1r4krsToZPHKnv-kod6B_4DLqMTR4&index=5 Around 25 mins it was fun to hear the source of the naming of "polyfill", I remember being unsure if she'd twigged I coined the word😄 rem/1846861123917590796

Continuing the #ffconf thread, here's Tim Holman who had me in stiches in 2018, because the web can be fun too: youtube.com/watch?v=-v-eSzgX9BU&list=PLXmT1r4krsTq3yrg4t14hPUbO1OsrA1Hx&index=9 Watch this one in place that'll let you laugh! 16 working days remaining to secure your place with us on the 8th Nov. rem/1846463550581027293

A year prior at #ffconf, in 2022, heydonworks gave an amazing talk on the web, capitalism and CSS…! You owe it to yourself to take these 40 minutes: youtu.be/GZsIhiXJjpY?si=dfzfA549byoCKGlc Then join us this year in early November: 2024.ffconf.org rem/1845737004480233923

Good morning. Treat yourself to 40 minutes brain food with one of the talks from hashtag#ffconf last year: lnkd.in/eZXcYGVG Maggie Appleton's excellent Dark Forrest talk. Then join us in 3 weeks for ffconf 2024 for more inspiration: 2024.ffconf.org

Just 30 days left if you want to get your ticket for #FFConf this year. ffconf.org/tickets

33 working days left if you want to get a ticket to #ffconf. 2024.ffconf.org/ 7/8 speakers announced, get you some content you can't just read on the web, or have chatgpt spew out to you.
-
There really are many, many amazing CFPs that have been sent for ffconf this year. I'm working on something to help preserve these and share with other event organisers. Still trying to place the 8th speaker.

Bespo question: anyone have multiple Alexa's setup, one connected to the kid's Spotify account and one/others to the default (my) Spotify account? I can't work out how to do it and I might be all squeezed out of tech juice
-
Here's a challenge for you - because I've just spent 10 minutes trying and I've given up. Get chatgpt to draw 10 cupcakes (in a single request, not like "draw cupcake" and then hit enter 10 times).

I wrote this yesterday remysharp.com/2024/08/30/the-moment-before-30th-aug CW: stillbirth, death

Making a dumb doorbell smart remysharp.com/2024/08/06/making-a-dumb-doorbell-smart A write up of a silly hack that turned out to be _really_ bad then a nice simple solution (ish) in the end.
-
I made our crappy/cheap remote doorbell, "smart". Details: front-end.social/@rem/112905962977890454 (though build instructions coming in a blog).

Social media tech support: Android phone, the "Phone" app I can't change the volume. It's always full blast, regardless of what I do to the media and call (and other) sliders. Anyone seen this before? (aka: know the fix?)

How a screen reader reads FFConf (or ffconf) and how the investigation I had done to "fix" it: remysharp.com/2024/07/23/screen-reading-eff-eff-conf

If you, or some one you know, has a talk about web components, I'd love to hear about it here: ffconf.org/articles/cfp/ (we pay our speakers, cover all travel, hotel and food)

My boy wants to get into music making. No specifically how to plan an instrument, but build a track, understanding adding beats, bass, lead, etc - using midi and software. Any beginner guides you would recommend? (I love music, but we Sharp's aren't entirely musically minded!)

Very cool that I can drop in on London Web Standards from home: discord.com/channels/796059530344792064/1261016006810406973

Annoucing the 5th topic for #ffconf - ffconf.org/articles/2024-speaker-announcement-5/ "Debugging the Mind: A Programmer's Guide to Critical Thinking" Because there's so many trends, so much hype and so many mixed messages on the web, I really wanted to check our ability to think critically.
-
Have you completed Doom (OG), and if so, how tricky is it (say medium level)? As a kid+teen I always assumed completing games was something other people did. Now I'm trying to revisit some of those games I missed out on (not that I've got time for 2+ hour play sessions!)

I wrote a thing that I originally wrote on LinkedIn. Anyway, remysharp.com/2024/07/12/is-ai-part-and-parcel-of-web-dev "Is AI part and parcel of dev web?" More thinking aloud, but doing it on my personal space.
-
Our next speaker: On burnout, purpose and making meaning. Very proud to have Amy_Hupe joining our ever growing family of ffconf speakers. See the topics, get your ticket, see us in November: 2024.ffconf.org/

Yesterday I finally soldered this (a PCB I designed to play Game Boy over HDMI display with a usb joystick…because I wanted to). I didn't work. It immediately started pulling 1 amp (the limit my bench supply was providing). DMG operates (idle) around 20mAh, so this was bad…

If you want to find out the new #ffconf speakers first, or get the videos when they're released first, or even read one of our occassional insights about #ffconf - you want this link: ffconf.org/news/

Anyone I know do Cloudinary (or better yet a dev there) - got a question that I think is a no, but hoping to get some eyes on it: community.cloudinary.com/discussion/744/conditional-workflow-for-metadata/p1?new=1

I wrote stuff: "Say what? On tinnitus and hearing" (actually I wrote it days ago, but only just pushed) remysharp.com/2024/07/05/say-what-on-tinnitus-and-hearing

Our next speaker is revealed for #ffconf, this time it's piccalilli_ (Andy Bell) on a subject I wrote down last year in November: how to give _and_ receive feedback: "Get the core right and the resilient code will follow" Get your tickets today: 2024.ffconf.org/

Been uploading almost imperceivable changes to #FFConf websites to improve accessibility. I hope to think I practice what we preach. Plan to write up the changes this week too. ffconf.org - our archive of talks and links to the latest event.

Wonder if anyone wants to take on a challenge/help me. I want to take Basier Square Medium (and regular) freefonts.co/fonts/basier-square-medium - and create a ligature from the letters "FFC" so they show as "ffc" - same spacing, it's literally if those three letters are in a row=>lowercase.

Does anyone know why (and how to fix) Voice Over reading this heading (which is an h2 > span + text) and ignoring the span at the start of the content? It's read aloud eventually, but it starts with "is a day of eight", rather than using the span inside the h2.
